A Ringside Seat
by Sherri Raymos
Fifteen years ago I had the incredible good fortune to watch the man I love and cherish become enlightened.
When it first occurred, we were a new couple struggling to find our rhythm and our place in the world. His sudden transformation catapulted us into a breathless whirlwind of change and development that continues to gain momentum to this day.
At first, I witnessed and shared his incredible struggle for understanding. I observed his reluctant and gradual acceptance that his life would never be what it used to be again. He explained to me that when he lost his ego, his entire perspective of what was considered "reality" had shifted from the concrete world of outer experience to the inward expanse of consciousness. As the years went by, he settled deeper and deeper into himself. He appeared the same, acted the same, but was quieter and more comfortable alone. Over time, it became obvious that he had forgotten what it was like not to be enlightened.
Eventually, all that silence began to move. It was like a deep well under increasing pressure. All of a sudden he would bring out the most profound insights about the nature of consciousness or the human body. His demeanor was different as well. He seemed absolutely sure of his knowledge and command of the laws of nature.
He began to re-interpret Vedic texts written by the ancient rishis. A rishi is one who, not only sees his real inner nature, but one who can also see the inner workings of cosmic law. He began to apply this increasing ability more and more to everyday life. It seemed like he was a delighted kid in a cosmic playground with the Sun and the Moon as his extraordinary toys.
Living with someone who has this experience, watching it grow and mature, and benefitting from the knowledge, has been the most exciting and rewarding experience of my life.
Now I want to share it with you. Here's his story …
